Overview
Some injuries get stuck. Months after a tendon or fascia problem began, it still hurts, because the tissue has stopped actively repairing. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) delivers acoustic pulses into the area, which is thought to stimulate blood flow and the body’s repair response.
Research support is strongest for chronic tendon conditions such as plantar fasciitis, lateral elbow pain (tennis elbow) and calcific shoulder tendinopathy. We use it when the problem is persistent and the diagnosis is clear, and always alongside exercise that rebuilds the tissue’s capacity.
Who it helps
- Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
- Tennis and golfer’s elbow
- Achilles and patellar tendon pain
- Calcific shoulder tendinopathy
- Chronic muscle trigger points
What to expect
Diagnose
A clear diagnosis first, so shock wave is only used where it is likely to help.
Treat
A gel-coupled applicator delivers pulses to the area. It can feel intense but is adjusted to your comfort.
Load
A home exercise program to strengthen the tissue as it heals.
Review
Progress is checked over the following weeks; improvement often continues after the last session.
Shock wave pairs well with Class IV laser for pain relief and with rehabilitation to rebuild tendon strength. Foot problems often benefit from a Foot Levelers™ scan as well.
